Oklahoma City finished the regular season with the best net rating in the NBA at +11.2, and they held opponents to 107.7 points per 100 possessions. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander averaged over 31 points per game while posting the second fewest turnovers among high-volume scorers in the league. The Thunder have swept their last two first round opponents, so it's tough to project Phoenix winning a game.

The Suns rank 15th in defensive rating and are a strong offensive rebounding team. They depend on isolation offense, which is exactly what OKC's defense is built to destroy. The Suns lack the playmaking to breakdown the Thunder for 48 minutes. OKC sweeps.

Houston leads Los Angeles in rebounding rate and holds a clear defensive edge. The Rockets control the paint on both ends and Kevin Durant is averaging 26 points per game on 52 percent shooting, and Sengun adds in another efficient 20.4 points per game. They commit the 4th most turnovers in the league, which is what separates them from the true contenders.

The Lakers without Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves have no offensive edge. They have been 2nd in assist percentage since Luka's absence, but their effective field goal percentage and true shooting numbers are no longer leading the league. The injury situation in Los Angeles gives Houston enough cushion to absorb a sloppy team performance while still closing the series at home. Rockets in five.

This is the best first-round matchup on the entire bracket. Both teams are top ten in net rating. Denver is the league's best offense, but the Wolves are more well-balanced on both ends of the floor. This matchup comes down to which team loses the ball at the wrong moment in the fourth quarter, and the Nuggets lead the league in assist-to-turnover ratio at 2.25 paired with the best effective field goal percentage in basketball at 57.7 percent.

Nikola Jokic posted 34 triple-doubles during the regular season. Minnesota does not have an answer for Jokic outside of pace, which should tire out the Wolves bigs as the series goes on. Six games and best series of the first round.

Portland matches up better than the seeds suggest. They rebound well defensively and don't give up the second-chance points that usually kill lower seeds. San Antonio is young and has never been here before in April. A crowd game in Portland is a real variable nobody wants to talk about.

But Victor Wembanyama is a different category of defensive problem and Portland's offense simply does not have the output to push this past five games. Spurs win the series. They might lose a game they shouldn't because playoff inexperience costs them. Spurs in five.

Before you read the East, the Cavaliers upset pick isn't a hot take for clicks. Brandon Ingram is averaging 21.5 points on 47.7% shooting this season, and the Raptors showed their defensive excellence when they went on a 31-0 run against Orlando on 3/29/26. The Cavs and Pistons funnel their offense through 1-2 players while the Raptors have an efficient lead scorer with Scottie Barnes and RJ Barrett helping to create offense.

The Pistons rank first in the conference in net rating and Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren have done a great job of translating stats into consistent wins this season. They have strong depth, but the lack of shooting makes it easier crowd the paint against Detroit.

Charlotte has more reliable offensive weapons than Detroit. LaMelo Ball, Kon Knueppel, Brandon Miller, and Coby White can shoot the ball well, which makes them a threat to swing the momentum of the game at any moment. The Hornets don't have the paint presence and turn the ball over too much to contain Detroit for a playoff series. Pistons in five.

Most people are going to dismiss Toronto without thinking about it for more than ten seconds. That reaction is exactly why this pick exists. The Raptors are on par with Cleveland on both sides of the ball when you look past the seed number at the metrics that actually decide playoff series. Their assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.16 ranks second in the East. Their net rating of +2.9 is real and earned against a comparable schedule.

This series comes down to who makes shots and protects the ball in the final two minutes. Brandon Ingram is the best closer in this series. Donovan Mitchell has not demonstrated a consistent ability to hit big shots, and the Cavaliers offense is predictable because two players take a majority of the shots. Jakob Poetl, RJ Barrett, and Scottie Barnes should help the Raptors outrebound the Cavs, and Immanuel Quickley has the length and quickness to contain James Harden in the series. I also wouldn't be surprised to see Sandro Mamukelashvili have a game where he gets hot from three to help the Raptors steal one since Cleveland allowed opponents to shoot at 37.2% from downtown on the season. Raptors in 6.

Atlanta is more dangerous than their seed suggests. The Hawks have enough talent on both ends to hang with New York. Every game in this series should come down to the final three minutes.

Jalen Brunson is known for his late-game heroics, so we know where the ball will be when New York is in this situation. The Hawks will likely follow a hot-hand approach, which may not be as effective in the playoffs when pressure is at its highest. I would not be surprised to see one of these games go to overtime. The Knicks win in five but do not expect any of these games to feel comfortable for a single second.

Boston has Philadelphia beat at nearly every measurable position. The Celtics rank second in the Eastern Conference in defensive rating, and Jaylen Brown is having a quietly elite season on both ends. They are also 3rd in the NBA in REB%

Tyrese Maxey or a random role player would need to play the game of his career for Philadelphia to win a single contest. Joel Embiid playing is about a five-game series instead of four. There is no compelling reason for the Sixers to risk a reinjury given his history and the near-zero probability of a meaningful run following it. Boston in four.

The second round is where the best matchups take place this year. Two of the series should be over in 5-6 games while the other two should go to 7 games. Both of these teams thrive in transition. Houston turns the ball over at one of the highest rates among playoff teams. Oklahoma City's defense capitalizes on turnovers and their transition offense ranks at the top of the league. The Rockets have the defense, isolation scorers, and transition offense to compete hard for two games, but the turnovers are an issue that OKC should be able to expose. OKC advances.

Nuggets vs Spurs

DEN in 7

Denver leads the league in effective field goal percentage and their true shooting number of 61.6 percent gives them the late-game edge that a young San Antonio team cannot match on talent alone. The Spurs should keep this series competitive since they are strong on both ends of the floor, but Denver's offense is too strong to stop in close games. Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic are 2nd and 3rd in clutch points this year with 321 combined points. De'Aaron Fox also has a history of being a clutch scorer, so this should be a series with overtimes and last-second shots. Denver wins in 7.

Pistons vs Raptors

Scottie Barnes and Brandon Ingram can match Jalen Duren and Cade Cunningham's offensive output. Cade was excellent in the clutch this season, but Brandon Ingram has shown that he can hit big shots too. This would be two defensive teams without much shooting, so the series will likely come down to an X-factor. RJ Barrett would likely be matched up with Duncan Robinson, which is a very favorable matchup for him. Toronto should return to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Knicks vs Celtics

NY in 7

The Knicks hold the edge in effective field goal percentage and true shooting. Boston did not replace Jrue Holiday, who was valuable in last year's playoffs against New York, and the Knicks have improved guard depth to wear down the Celtics backcourt in a series. Both sides should have some blowout wins, but Brunson should have his way late in close games which gives the Knicks the series.

The Series No One Wants to Miss

Back in the 2011 Carmelo Anthony trade, the Knicks gave Denver the right to swap first-round picks in 2016. Two years later, New York traded their 2016 first-round pick to Toronto in the Andrea Bargnani deal. Denver used the swap to move from No. 9 to No. 7 and drafted Jamal Murray, while Toronto selected Jakob Poeltl at No. 9 with the Knicks' original pick. If the playoffs go as I expect, the Knicks will run into both players, who should be key contributors. Tim Hardaway Jr., Immanuel Quickley, and RJ Barrett were all former Knicks first-round picks, so a championship run could mean being haunted by a decade's worth of their own decisions.

OKC is the leagues best defense and transition team, but Denver is the leagues best offense and has the leagues best assist-to-turnover ratio. They are built to neutralize all of the Thunder's strengths. SGA, Murray, and Jokic are the top clutch scorers in the NBA this season, so Jalen Williams will likely have to step up in every close game in this series. Given that Williams is inconsistent, I don't see the Thunder being in a favorable situation in any close games against Denver. The Rockets and Suns aren't good enough first round matchups to prepare OKC for this situation either. Each team should have 2 blowouts, and Denver should win 2 close games.

Knicks vs Raptors

NY in 5

This would be a very favorable matchup for the Knicks because Toronto does not have an answer for Karl Anthony-Towns. Brandon Ingram, Scottie Barnes, and RJ Barrett would have to deal with Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby, and Josh Hart. Mitchell Robinson matches up well with Jakob Poetl. Toronto has some disruptive defenders in Quickley and Shead to bother Brunson, but they lack the offensive firepower to keep up with the Knicks. Knicks in five.

Denver Wins in 6 · Jamal Murray Finals MVP

Denver is the best late-game execution team in basketball. Nikola Jokic has the highest true shooting percentage of any center who qualifies for the scoring title and he is doing it while leading the league in triple-doubles and posting the second-best assist-to-turnover ratio among all centers in the playoff field. The numbers have been pointing here since November.

New York wins two games in this series because Jalen Brunson is genuinely capable of heating up late and because Mitchell Robinson, Karl-Anthony Towns, and OG Anunoby can give Jokic a run for his money defensively. With Jamal Murray's great 4th quarter performances this season, Karl-Anthony Towns will have to be a consistent offensive factor late in games, which is not something he has a reputation for.

Denver's ability to generate the right shot against a locked-in playoff defense is the quality that separates conference champions from NBA champions. The Nuggets close it out in six games. Jamal Murray hits the game 6 dagger at MSG and wins Finals MVP.
